Word Count Widget

Β  As part of my writing goals for 2012, I wanted to find a word count widget that I could display, for all to see, on my sidebar. Partly because it’s motivating to see that little blue line move ever closer to my goal of (approximately) 75,000 words as I progress on my novel writing. Also, because I’ll be more apt to stick with my writing goals when my lack of progress will be evident on my blog.

After much web surfing, I found a word count widget that’s not only sleek, but also is easy to use in wordpress! Yay! πŸ™‚Β  The only downside, as I don’t know any html code and don’t have the time to figure it out, is that I have to continue returning to the original website to plug in my new word count numbers every time I want to update the widget on my blog. Minor details…

Maybe you have a different widget you prefer, but if not check out this site to copy the html into your own blog.

Happy writing!

(Note: Since I first wrote this post, the word count widget I originally used no longer exists. I have replaced that widget with another that I found to be equally as effective.)

1001 Beers

Β  I really enjoy a good beer. There’s a huge difference between drinking a quality brew and certain carbonated piss-water beverages that pretend they are beers (and shall remain nameless). So I was especially excited when my parents gave me this tome for Christmas. Although I became less excited when I realized I had only tried maybe thirty of the 1001 listed within its pages. Yikes!

While I work my way (slowly) through the book, I’ve been having a lot of fun finding out more about the beers I’m drinking as well as the process that goes into making beer. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people who are in the brewing business or just appreciate the finer qualities of a good beer. And, to top it all off, I got a beer making kit and am trying to do a little research before I jump into making my first home brew.

Here are a few of my favorite resources:

Websites

Brews & Books – Josh Christie keeps his sleek blog up to date with his picks and reviews of all things literary and beer.

Beer Advocate – The quintessential beer website that has pretty much every you need to know about anything beer related. It also has a companion magazine.

Books

Beer School: Bottling Success at the Brooklyn Brewery

Beer Craft: A Simple Guide to Making Great Beer

Brewmaster’s Art: The history and science of beermaking (Lecture on CD by expert Charles Bamforth

Brewed Awakening

Magazines

DRAFT Magazine

All About Beer

Brewing Kits

Northern Brewers

Enjoy your beers and remember to drink responsibly! πŸ™‚

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila @ Book Journey. Books, books and more books. What are you reading??

Had a marvelous weekend. Great biking, great running. Found a great farm stand just down the street from my house. I’d driven past the multi-tiered sign numerous times, but hadn’t bothered to stop in. Then, after visiting another farm stand and finding it closed, my girlfriend and I decided to pay the other a visit. We drove down the gravel driveway and stopped in front a large barn surrounded by gardens, hanging flowers, and paddocks replete with fat, furry donkeys. Inside the barn, there are big refrigerators stocked with corn, peaches, jam, eggplants, and other produce. Tables overflowing with ripe tomatoes, green peppers, fresh bunches of flowers, and tiny garlic buds flank the fridges. On a small table in front there’s a glass jar to pay via the honor system. Of course we had to have a little of everything – made for some delicious meals! πŸ™‚

Here’s what I’ve been reading:

X-Men First Class – This graphic novel seemed appropo with the recent movie release of the same name. The illustrations are fresh and lively and make the story read with a quick energy. I’ve already put a hold on Vol 2 at the library! πŸ™‚

Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner – Weiner’s novels are always highly praised and this one is no different. The story centers around surrogacy and the women who’s lives are changed as a result. I’m really excited about this one!

Devil in the White City by Eric Larson – I started to read the novel form of this touted book a while ago and just couldn’t get into it. I picked up the book on CD hoping for a better outcome. πŸ™‚ The premise of the book – a coldblooded serial killer and the Chicago World’s Fair – have called to me for quite some time. Can’t wait to drive to work tomorrow! πŸ™‚

Book bloggers UNITE!!!

When Meghan Cox Gurdon wrote “Darkness Too Visible” in her Wall Street Journal on June 4, I doubt she had this kind of widespread outrage in mind. Authors and readers all over the blogosphere and twitter landscape have been voicing their vehement  dislike for Ms. Gurdon’s myopic article on YA literature.

When I taught junior high in CA I had to deal with parents like Gurdon who would rather tattle to the local (or globally read) newspaper on what they deem as “right” rather than talk to someone who is actually knowledgeable on the subject and find a solution. Or at least understand the other side of their debate more thoroughly bashing it.

But, alas, people like Gurdon will continue to give their biased, closeted opinions and others will continue to have to suffer because of it.

While there are posts aplenty ringing loudly in protestation, Mr. Christopher John Farley has written a blog post I thought was very well done. To read it, click HERE.

What’s In a Name?

I’ve decided it’s time for a change. A name change to be specific. I started this blog primarily to chat about running, but as I progressed I realized I kept gravitating towards books. I love blogging about what I’m reading and writing and visiting other blogs that shared my bookish interests. And, let’s face it, my fellow book bloggers ROCK! πŸ™‚

So as I pondered my new name the light bulb went off – why not combine two of my favorite things into one blog? Thus my new blog name – Booking It With Runner Sami. Sweet! πŸ˜€

Bloggiesta Day 3

It’s the final day for Bloggiesta. You still have time to head over to see what all the fuss is about @ Maw Books. It’s a great way to meet new bloggers, visit old friends and glean great ideas for developing and improving your blog.

I got a lot accomplished this Bloggiesta and it was great to see what others were up to. Here are a few of my goals and what I was able to accomplish:

1. Connect with other bloggers on a regular basis (A daily task, but I’m up to the challenge!)

2. Learn how to embed video into my posts

3. Post more on trends in reading/writing/fitness (Also a daily task, but I’m on Google Alerts so I can get the latest information and pass it along to my readers)

4. Design a signature to appear at the end of my posts

5. Have a social network bar and/or “Similar Posts” widget also at the end of my posts (As far as I know wordpress doesn’t support the LinkWithin widget that would allow me to have that feature in my post – I’ll keep searching for something that’s similar and compatible)

6. Create a new button for my RSS feeds

7. Improve the pages I have on my blog (Also ongoing, but I added a new page that I’m super excited about!)

For the rest of Bloggiesta I’m going to focus on: writing more posts, improving the pages on my blog, visiting stellar blog sites, and learn how to embed video into my posts. Thanks for stopping by! πŸ˜€
