New Trend in YA Lit?

Cue creepy organ music.

Insert blood-curling scream here.

Lights vanish…Let the terror begin!

Do you love horror movies? Does the thought of reading Stephen King alone in a thunderstorm send shivers of excitement up your spine? Do you find yourself wishing your book had just a few more severed limbs? Look no further! There’s a new trend that’s fast approaching YA lit, ready to smash it over the head with a mace. HORROR! Muhahaha…um, sorry, got a little carried away…

David Gatward is the author of a new trilogy of books set to release a few months apart beginning this July. Entitled The Dead, The Dark, and The D***ed, they center around Lazarus a boy who’s fate in life is to send the dead back from whence they came. Except they don’t want to leave and thus leave trails of gore and mayhem in their wake. Gross. With all the video games available today highlighting their gory violence, it seems like a natural translation to take it to the written page. I haven’t read Gatward’s books yet, but plan on reading The Dead when it hits stores in July. I’m not a fan of horror (although Shaun of the Dead made me giggle), but I feel like as a writer and lover of YA lit, I should be in the know.

What’s your opinion? Do you think there should be a bigger representation of horror in YA lit?
